The Skim-Scan Technique

1. Read the first sentence (demographics + chief complaint)
2. Scan for numbers, lab values, and investigation results
3. Read the last sentence (what is being asked)
4. Return to fill in the middle only if needed

Identifying Key Information

Critical: Age, sex, duration, key complaint, abnormal exam finding, abnormal lab result.
Ignorable: Patient occupation unless relevant, negative review of systems, normal lab values.

Avoiding Red Herrings

Exam setters include plausible but irrelevant information. Key rule: if the information does not narrow your differential diagnosis, it is a red herring.

Practice Method
