Every year, we get asked the same question: "Which books should I buy for UPSC CMS / NEET PG / INI-CET?" This post is the verified answer — every book on this list has appeared in actual previous-year questions for at least one of these exams. We cross-referenced the PYQ archive on CrackCMS to build this shortlist.
Honest caveat: the best book is the one you actually read cover-to-cover with PYQs open. A book you finish always beats a "better" book you skim.
Why this list (and how every book on it is verified)
We tagged every UPSC CMS / NEET PG / INI-CET PYQ on the CrackCMS archive by source text. A book makes this list only if it appears in ≥5% of questions in the relevant subject area across at least one of the three exams. Books that appear in only one exam are still listed but with the exam scope flagged.
Anti-shill rule: we have no affiliate links, no sponsorship arrangements with any publisher. The list is built from PYQ citation data, not from publisher relationships.
Pre-clinical — Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
Anatomy
- BD Chaurasia — the standard Indian textbook for Anatomy. Covers the breadth UPSC CMS + NEET PG need. For NEET PG depth, pair with Vishram Singh or Gray's Anatomy for Students.
- Viva-voce / image-based Qs — practice the CrackCMS Anatomy Q-bank.
Skip: Cunningham's (too detailed for PG entrance), Netter's Atlas (reference only).
Physiology
- Guyton & Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology — the gold standard. Covers NEET PG + UPSC CMS + INI-CET Physiology questions.
- Indu Khurana — Indian alternative; condenses Guyton into ~500 pages. Faster to read but loses depth.
Skip: Costanzo (USMLE-flavoured, less relevant for Indian PG).
Biochemistry
- Harper's Illustrated Biochemistry — the standard Indian PG textbook. Covers NEET PG + UPSC CMS Biochemistry questions.
- Satyanarayana — Indian alternative; faster read but loses depth.
Skip: Lippincott's (too detailed for the time you have).
Para-clinical — Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine
Pathology
- Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease — the gold standard. Covers General Pathology + Systemic Pathology. Best for NEET PG depth.
- Harsh Mohan — Indian alternative; condenses Robbins into one volume. Faster to read.
- Ramnik Sood — Indian alternative; covers the breadth UPSC CMS needs.
Decision rule: if you have 4+ months, read Robbins. If less, read Harsh Mohan.
Pharmacology
- KD Tripathi's Essentials of Medical Pharmacology — the Indian PG standard. Covers NEET PG + UPSC CMS + INI-CET Pharmacology.
- Sharma & Sharma — alternative; useful for high-yield drug-class tables.
Microbiology
- Ananthanarayanan & Panicker's Textbook of Microbiology — the Indian PG standard.
- Apurba Sastry's Essentials of Medical Microbiology — newer alternative; more visual, faster to read.
Forensic Medicine
- Narayan Reddy's The Essentials of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology — the Indian PG standard.
- For UPSC CMS + NEET PG Forensic Medicine, this is the only book you need.
Medicine (Internal Medicine + Paediatrics)
Internal Medicine
- Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (2-volume or condensed Indian edition) — the gold standard for Indian PG Medicine. Covers >90% of Medicine questions in UPSC CMS / NEET PG / INI-CET.
- API (Association of Physicians of India) Textbook of Medicine — Indian alternative; condenses Harrison with India-specific chapters.
- Kundu's Medicine — faster read for revision.
Time budget: for Medicine alone, budget 80–120 hours across your prep cycle.
Paediatrics
- OP Ghai's Essential Pediatrics — the Indian PG standard.
- IAP Textbook of Pediatrics — newer alternative; more comprehensive but longer.
- For NEET PG + UPSC CMS Paediatrics, OP Ghai is sufficient.
Surgery + Orthopaedics + Anaesthesia
General Surgery
- Bailey & Love's Short Practice of Surgery — the gold standard. Covers UPSC CMS + NEET PG + INI-CET Surgery questions.
- Manipal Textbook of Surgery — Indian alternative; covers the breadth for UPSC CMS.
- SRB's Manual of Surgery — another popular Indian alternative; condensed.
Orthopaedics
- Apley's System of Orthopaedics — the standard. Covers the breadth UPSC CMS + NEET PG need.
- Maheshwari's Orthopaedics — Indian alternative; condensed.
Anaesthesia
- Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology — the gold standard but heavy. For PG entrance, the Anaesthesia chapter in Bailey & Love + Manipal is sufficient.
OBG + Paediatrics
Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- DC Dutta's Textbook of Obstetrics + DC Dutta's Textbook of Gynaecology — the Indian PG standard. Covers UPSC CMS + NEET PG + INI-CET OBG questions.
- Williams Obstetrics — gold standard but heavy. For NEET PG depth only.
- Shaw's Textbook of Gynaecology — useful for clinical Gynaecology depth.
Paediatrics
- See Paediatrics under Medicine above — OP Ghai is the standard.
PSM / Community Medicine / Biostatistics
PSM
- Park's Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine — the gold standard. Covers UPSC CMS + NEET PG + INI-CET PSM questions.
- For NHM updates: supplement with the National Health Mission document library.
Why Park alone is not enough: UPSC CMS and NEET PG test current NHM programme names (RNTCP, NVBDCP, JSY, JSSK, RMNCH+A, etc.). Park's last edition may not have the most recent updates. Cross-check with the official NHM portal.
What to skip
These books are commonly recommended but not actually needed for Indian PG entrance:
- Cunningham's Manual of Practical Anatomy — too detailed; the breadth UPSC CMS / NEET PG need is in BD Chaurasia.
- Harper's Biochemistry (full US edition) — too detailed; the Indian edition is sufficient.
- Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics — too detailed; KD Tripathi is the right depth.
- Harrison's full 2-volume set — heavy. The Indian condensed edition (or the e-book) is sufficient.
- Williams Obstetrics (full US edition) — too detailed; DC Dutta is sufficient.
The rule of thumb: if a book is heavier than 1,500 pages and you have <6 months to prep, skip it. There is no Indian PG entrance question that requires a 2,000-page book to answer.
Digital resources (Q-banks + PYQ archives)
The textbook is the foundation. The PYQ bank + mock simulator are the cramming layer.
| Resource | What it covers | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| CrackCMS PYQ archive (/questions) | UPSC CMS + NEET PG + INI-CET PYQs, tagged by subject + topic + year | Solving previous-year questions after every chapter read |
| CrackCMS Simulator (/simulator) | Full-length CBT mocks with realistic timing + negative marking | Mock tests in the last 30–60 days |
| CrackCMS AI Tutor (/ai-tutor) | Explains every PYQ answer with the underlying textbook reference | Doubts + on-demand explanations |
| NBE / AIIMS / UPSC official PYQs | The actual previous-year papers | Final-week sanity check |
Pattern: textbook first → PYQs on every topic → mocks → AI Tutor for doubts. Do not substitute one for another.

Frequently asked questions
Is Harrison enough for NEET PG Medicine?
Yes — for clinical Medicine, Harrison covers >90% of NEET PG + UPSC CMS + INI-CET questions. For rapid revision, pair it with the Harrison-based Indian texts (e.g. API Medicine) which condense the 2-volume Harrison into one.
Is Bailey & Love enough for Surgery in NEET PG?
Yes, for the *general surgery* NEET PG syllabus. Bailey & Love (short version) covers the breadth. For orthopaedics + urology + anaesthesia, supplement with Manipal Textbook of Surgery.
Is Park enough for PSM in UPSC CMS?
Yes — Park's Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine is the standard for both UPSC CMS and NEET PG PSM questions. Supplement with the current NHM document library for national-programme updates.
Should I buy Robbins or Harsh Mohan for Pathology?
For NEET PG depth, Robbins (General + Systemic Pathology) is the gold standard. For UPSC CMS speed, Harsh Mohan condenses the same content. Choose Robbins if you have time; Harsh Mohan if you do not.
Do I need to read the full textbook or can I rely on a question bank?
A question bank is not a substitute for the textbook. The right pattern: read the textbook once (broad coverage), then do PYQs chapter-by-chapter (depth), then take mocks (timing + revision). CrackCMS is the PYQ + mock layer; the textbook is the foundation.
Which single book covers the most UPSC CMS PYQ topics?
Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine covers the single largest share of UPSC CMS PYQ topics — particularly Medicine Paper I. For Paper II, Bailey & Love + Park + Dutta cover ~70% of questions.
Are foreign (US) textbooks better than Indian textbooks for these exams?
No. Indian textbooks (Park, Dutta, Ghai, Harsh Mohan, KD Tripathi) are written for Indian PG syllabi and cover the question patterns UPSC / NBE / AIIMS use. Foreign textbooks (Williams, Goodman & Gilman) are useful for depth but not for pattern.
